Five Tips to Maintaining the Hottest Luxury Items

Have you ever ruined one of your favorite shirts, shoes, or bags? It’s the worst! Whether you want to add a hypewear item to your collection or simply display it out for all to see, maintaining a pristine condition is an absolute must. Regardless of the price paid for it, it is at least loved by you. In an effort to help everyone show off their best outfits, here are just a few easy options to help those out there looking to keep their product timeless and always in mint condition.

Tip 1: Make sure you buy authentic

When shopping for a luxury item, one of the biggest considerations is making sure that you are buying what is agreed upon. Considering the high presence of counterfeiting within sneakers and shoes1, ensuring the authenticity and quality of your item should be your highest priority. Counterfeiters work hard; as fashion enthusiasts we must work harder.

When looking to authenticate your item, craftsmanship, attention to details, and material selection are significant factors. Ultimately, no matter how close to the ideal model, the counterfeit industry will always look for cutting corners to save both time and money. For example, counterfeit leather products oftentimes use pleather to cut costs as it looks like leather. Learn to recognize the difference between leather and pleather! As a general note, leather can range from feeling course to smooth. If the item in question feels extremely smooth or plastic-like, then it's pleather. Stitching patterns are the hardest thing to replicate due to the specificity of the outline when it comes to leather products such as shoes, bags, or shirts. When looking around, check for stitching that isn’t supposed to be there or is inconsistent.

A common filter outside of general craftsmanship is in the tags used, either on the box or on the product. Check that the font choice of the product is exactly what you would expect for it to look like. Cross-reference before you buy! These features can be the easiest ones to identify since counterfeiters don’t necessarily expect for you to properly examine the size tags, stickers, or box labels.

Everyone loves saving money but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t remain vigilant! If anything, remain vigilant so that you don’t fall into the trap of a good deal: If the shoes are priced far below their normal value, then they’re either fake or heavily damaged! Always make sure that the website or seller that you’re buying it from is authentic. While price negotiations between a buyer and a seller can happen, be realistic with your expectations.

Tip 2: Proper maintenance is key!

So now you’ve finally saved up for and bought this prized possession. Presumably, the next thing on your mind is how to protect it from muck to keep it in mint condition. Know that not all bags, shoes, and shirts are created equally! Different material compositions require different cleaners to optimally clean and preserve. Make sure to research your item in case you can’t use any general cleaners. If possible, look up cleaning instructions from the manufacturer.

First and foremost, generally, avoid handling all leather-based products with greasy hands to prevent the accumulation of grime or oils. For cleaning leather items, look into getting a highly-rated leather cleaner. The only criteria for these items is that they’re completely safe for the leather and that it’s not expensive. Maintaining your items should not be breaking the bank.

As clothes tend to be more forgiving and easier to clean, ensuring that they remain clean is important for preventing faded threads. In cleaning clothes composed of 100% cotton, there are plenty of indicators on every clothing tag that shows exactly how to wash or clean your item without any worry in quality-reduction or in the number of visible threads. Generally, these symbols cover washing, drying, bleaching, ironing, or professional cleaning.2 Once you’ve finished washing, just do a quick look over for any stray threads that may have emerged from being washed with other clothes. A simple cut with scissors will save an evening of stress.

One simple thing to keep in mind that will go a long way: the weather! Make sure you check before busting out a pair of fire kicks that could end up stained by mud by the end of the day. On those days, it’s best to bust out a Supreme ShedRain than a pair of Off-Whites.

Finally, there is nothing worse than planning out the perfect outfit only to find out that you’re sporting lint-covered goods! Learn to love using a lint roller!  It’s not specifically designed for just suits as it can be used on generally any product. Use it to take off hairs, dust, and lint, especially if you’re washing it with other items.

Tip 3: Avoid Over-Cleaning

Given the above instructions on cleaning your product, it is highly important to AVOID OVER-CLEANING. This may seem paradoxical to some considering that you want to keep your item as pristine as possible. However, temper your desire of perfection. Using items such as leather cleaners constantly can lead to a buildup of chemical damage overtime.

On a daily basis, make the spot-cleaning method with water and soap your friend. For this, simply fill a bowl with warm water and mix in a small amount of soap. Take a paper towel and gently clean any suspicious areas. At the end of the day, when you have an item for a long time, it is perfectly natural for it to develop small stains or cracks on the inside or outside. Don’t beat yourself up over it as your happiness and content are higher things to value.

Tip 4: Properly Store Them

By this point, your items should be authenticated and cleaned (but not overly-cleaned). Don’t diminish your dedication by putting them away improperly! For taking care of your quality wears when you’re not wearing them, the process isn’t finished until they’re put away. Everyone has their own preference for putting away their clothes that vary due to constraints in time, money, and space.

If you have available closet space, hanging clothes are excellent for jackets, hoodies, and heavy-fabric clothing. Unlike folding clothes, hanging does not allow clothes to develop noticeable creases. In terms of the types of hangers that should be used, wooden hangers are vastly superior in their composition and design in comparison to plastic hangers. Although they are pricier, the design of wooden hangers is to migrate the change of pressure from gravity from the collar to a more natural place such as the shoulders. For daily clothes and outfits, hanging helps keep them fresh while reducing the overall processing time due to the lack of reliance on irons and steamers. A common problem that comes with hanging clothes is the possibility of stretching out the collars. However, if this is a concern, then this can be alleviated by inserting the hanger from the bottom of the shirt.

Folded clothes are best saved for those special objects that do not get worn on a weekly basis. Whether it’s being saved for a special event, or its out of season, one must be more vigilant when folding grail items. When you’re folding these clothes, remember to follow the basic folding principles: fold on a flat surface, don’t bend any graphics, and lower the number of folds. Prior to wearing folded clothes, make sure to double check that there are no creases. If there are creases, this can be easily solved by steaming them while you take a hot shower, or taking an iron and spot checking. Although there are no concerns with stretched collars for folding, ensuring that there are no creases should be the primary check.

For other items such as shoes and bags, there is no need for hanging or folding. To preserve your shoes and bags, whenever they’re not in use, start off by keeping the items in a dark place. Especially if the item is a collection piece, light can cause yellowing of the sample due to degradation which can work to devalue your items. With leather products, store these items in a room with an AC and minimal levels of humidity. Finally, make sure that there’s enough space between your products! Creases in shoes and bags also exist and can be created by letting it be crushed if they’re not neatly organized.

Tip 5: Sport them Out!

What’s the point in buying valuable things if you don’t actually use them? Using your expensive items is fun and should be embraced! It’s nice to want to take care of your items and ensure that they look the best that they can. But there’s a difference between healthy participation in a hobby and having an unhealthy obsession. Buy stuff that you like and want to use. If you’re tired of them, then you can sell them down the line. As beautiful as these articles of clothing, shoes, and bags are, they will look better on you than just sitting unloved in a dark closet 24/7 after one Instagram post. At the end of the day, not too many people pay attention to the clothes that you wear. Make sure to not get dressed as if it is a contest. Dress just for yourself and live life as it’s meant to be lived: Not under protection, but with adventure.
